Escaping the madness of the UK and heading to foreign lands is a great way to spend Christmas, but before you travel it’s a good idea to prepare ahead for the journey and to understand the rules of the road for the country you are travelling too.
Here are a few tips on our most popular winter destinations:
Anyone thinking of embarking on a road trip longer than 3 hours needs to think about the person they are sharing the car with. I can vouch for this from experience; being stuck in a car with someone who believes that ABBA are the greatest band on earth and no other CD should be played, well that can drive you a little crazy!
Now your choice of passenger is purely a personal one, so we turned to our friends on Twitter to see who they would take along for the ride.

The snow season is always a fun one but for driving a vehicle in it, it can also be a dangerous one. Most people from the UK are used to some snow and have had some experience driving in it, but head over to Europe in the winter months and you could be in for a shock; the snowfall there is generally a lot heavier than in the UK and it lasts longer!
Are you a suspicious person? Will you walk under a ladder or let a black cat cross your path, or more to the point would you drive along some of the world’s spookiest roads on the spookiest date of the year, Halloween?

Dublin is Ireland’s number one tourist hotspot, and with good reason too! The history and traditions of this beautiful city have been well restored and the people of Dublin have that famous Irish charm. The city itself is home to many great attractions and fun things to do, however take that journey with a Dublin car hire away from the city and that’s when you get to see Ireland at its best!
Drive around 45minutes north, to the coast, and visit the small fishing town of Skerries. The town has a real community feel with its clean streets and floral displays in summer. You can visit the restored water-mill or spend your time enjoying the long sandy beaches. The harbour area also has some great restaurants and pubs!

If you are a bit on the adventurous side, trying a trip to the Closed Cities might seem like an exciting idea, but we can assure you they’re more hassle than they’re worth, being just normal industrial cities with extra barbed wire, troublesome armed patrols and the odd nuclear reactor.

Grab a cheap flight and collect your hire car at Budapest Airport. It is a wonderful city and not hard to navigate yourself around. Traffic in Hungary travels on the right, but be careful as you must always give way to taxis and buses! If you are looking to park up in the city then you are in luck as most main tourist areas have free parking; now that is something you won’t find in many cities!
If you are heading off onto the motorways then you must make sure that you have a toll sticker. Currently they are required for the following motorways; M1, M3, M5, M6, M7, M30 & M35. You can obtain the stickers at petrol stations or motorway service stations and they last for 4 days, 1 week or 1 month. The speed limit on the motorways is 74mph/120kph.
If you do get pulled over by a police car for committing a traffic offence then they will issue you with a payment order that must be paid in full within 30 days. You should at no time hand cash to a police officer.
Thinking of taking your Hungary hire car to more remote locations? If you do then be sure to check you have a full tank of fuel as some of the smaller towns may not have petrol stations. Also it is handy to have some small change with you as it is common practice to tip the staff when they fill up your car. Another point to make is if you have any children aged 3 or below travelling with you then they must be seated in a suitable child restraint system appropriate for their weight.
