Travel Trivia Tuesday

Tuesday Jul 14, 2009

Jamie, you are our first Italian travel trivia winner of the month! The Roman monument depicted in last week’s quiz was indeed the Castel Sant Angelo (well worth seeing if you ever visit the city). Now for this week’s question…

A trip to Venice guarantees a unique experience. This urban masterpiece has canals instead of streets, boats instead of buses, and ornate bridges instead of subways. It is every bit as romantic, beautiful and bizarre as it appears in films and on TV.

Venice is composed of more than a hundred tiny islets, packed closely together around canals. The city is in a lagoon, protected from the sea by a long strip of land called the Lido. Venice is famously sinking and it has long been feared that the beautiful city will one day disappear beneath the water.

When they arrive in Venice, most tourists make a beeline for the large public square and cathedral pictured below. What is this square (or piazza) called? Write your guess in the comments box below, and I’ll reveal the correct answer next week.

Paul:

Saint Marks Piazza (make sure you head to Florian’s for a very expensive, but very nice cappucino!).

Good tip – after all nothing in Venice is exactly cheap . . . at least that’s what I found! Well worth a day or two though as its an incredible place.
