Travel Trivia Tuesday
Posted by gemmarees | Under Travel Trivia Tuesday Apr 7, 2009It seems last week’s question was just a bit too tricky! Nobody correctly guessed that the city described as Lisbon’s sibling in north Portugal is Porto.
Hopefully you’ll have better luck with this week’s quiz. As Auto Europe’s destination of the month is Southern Ireland, each travel trivia Tuesday question throughout April will relate to the Emerald Isle.
Ireland isn’t just popular as a holiday destination. It seems many thousands of people are keen to celebrate any links they might have to the country. Apparently ten times the population of Ireland claim Irish ancestry in the US, and one in four Britons do the same. Whether it’s the accent, the rich cultural heritage, or the laid-back way of life, it seems that everyone wants to be a part of it.
St. Patrick is one of Ireland’s most famous icons – and the reason for some of the biggest parties on the planet. What did St. Patrick originally use the shamrock leaf to symbolise? As always, the answer will be revealed next Tuesday.

Hello,
I live in New Zealand and St Patricks day is celebrated with as much vigour here as in Ireland. In fact one guy at my work took the whole week off to celebrate (and recover)! Don’t you think that the popularity of the day and of the Irish in general, is due to the fact that the Irish know how to party?!
I just learnt (via google!) that the shamrock was used by St. Patrick in the fifth century to demonstrate the meaning of the Trinity… interesting.

Hi there,
Well, I’ve got Irish blood, so I should know this! I think that St.Patrick used the shamrock to symbolise the Holy Trinity. I keep looking for the 4 leafed shamrock…but I’m yet to find one!!
